What is DataFlex?

When Character Mode Applications Count!

DataFlex® 3.2 is an advanced object-oriented 4GL designed for developing database applications. The integration of a proven framework enables you to quickly build reliable, high performance business applications. The DataFlex framework is the same framework used in Visual DataFlex, providing a consistent business rules environment for Web, Windows, and character mode solutions.

DataFlex is also a completely portable development environment. Character mode applications can be developed for Windows, Linux and all leading UNIX systems. Code can be easily ported to any supported environment, typically with nothing more than a recompilation of the source code.

DataFlex 3.2 has plenty to offer, for both current DataFlex developers, and for anyone seeking a transportable, state-of-the-art system for building mission critical business applications.

DataFlex 3.2 Supported Environments

Linux

DataFlex 3.2 for Linux leverages the power of the Linux OS with the advantages of Intel-based server hardware platforms to offer developers a true high-performance, low cost option to the more expensive Unix servers. Visit the DataFlex 3.2 for Linux page for detailed information about how DataFlex 3.2 for Linux can lower your "Total Cost of Ownership" and improve application performance.

UNIX
For the most demanding IT environments, power-users have long relied on the stability and performance of DataFlex software running on Unix platforms. Supported systems include SCO UNIX, UnixWare, IBM AIX, HP/UX, and Sun Microsystems Solaris.

Windows Console Mode
DataFlex 3.2 supports character mode application development for Windows Console Mode and MS-DOS environments. Supported environments under Windows Console Mode include Win98SE, WinNT and Win2000.

The Major Benefits of DataFlex 3.2

High Performance Transactional Database
DataFlex's database is well known for speed, reliability and ease of administration. Hundreds of on-line users and millions of records are no challenge for this well proven DBMS.

"Dual Mode" Product
While all of the considerable benefits of object oriented programming are available in DataFlex 3.2, all of the procedural programming features of revision 2.3b and many new procedural and database features are incorporated in 3.2 too! It's up to you to choose whether you use a procedural or an object oriented development style. To run a program compiled with any revision prior to 3.2, you must first recompile the program with the DataFlex 2.3 compiler. DataFlex 2.3b through to 3.1x source files are compatible with 3.2 and should compile without any problems. Please refer to White Paper below for further details.

Extended Support for Large Scale Applications
DataFlex 3.2 supports up to 4095 databases per application with the extended filelist specification.

Client/Server Options
DataFlex 3.2 supports the use of foreign database drivers under Windows Console Mode, Linux and most of the major UNIX environments. For UNIX environments, drivers are available from Data Access Worldwide for the IBM DB2 Universal Database. Third Party vendors support other client/ server options.

Increased Application Speed
bullet

DataFlex 3.2 automatically sets files which do not participate in Save and Delete operations to Read Only. This significantly improves data throughput and network performance in large multi-user systems.

bullet

DataFlex 3.2 uses new, intelligent searching technology. This can provide a dramatic speed increase in data-retrieval operations, such as report queries, batch processes and the filling of selection list data.

Increased Data Integrity
Transaction Rollback for Increased Data Reliability

Increased Programmer Productivity through fully Integrated DataFlex Application Framework (DAF)
DAF is fully integrated into DataFlex 3.2's software and documentation. DAF is Data Access Corporation's recommended approach for maximizing developer productivity for building object-oriented applications.

Seamless migration through transportable application code
DataFlex 3.2 provides a scalable migration solution to preserve existing investments in DataFlex 2.3, 3.0x, and 3.1x applications.

Upgrading to DataFlex 3.2 White Paper
This paper discusses the tasks involved in upgrading to DataFlex 3.2 from prior character-mode DataFlex revisions. One of the focus points of the paper is troubleshooting; how to avoid future problems and how to solve current ones. The paper also discusses issues such as improved multi-user code checking and migrating to Linux and Unix platforms. Click here for more.

Extend the life cycle and improve the performance of your valuable DataFlex applications by moving from your aging Unix systems to a contemporary Linux/Intel platform.

Businesses migrating to Linux from Solaris, AIX, and HP Unix environments can expect to benefit from lower-cost servers due to the wide availability of commodity Intel hardware. Business case studies continue to show that it is surprisingly easy and beneficial to switch from Unix to Linux. Savings made possible in hardware costs are compelling for many companies. The transition is relatively easy, given the similarity of the programming languages used for the two operating systems. Plus, many tools and solutions for Linux are available through the open source community.
