Visual DataFlex 12 Web Application Server (WAS)

The Visual DataFlex 12 Web Application Server is the successor to WebApp Server 3. Numerous important features and changes have been introduced, and server performance and efficiency is significantly enhanced.

Preliminary performance tests of the Web Application Server produced the following results:

bullet

A loop containing 5,000 get/set properties that takes 58 seconds in WebApp Server 3 takes only 3 seconds in Web Application Server!

bullet

Retrieving 1,000 records from a database takes 15 seconds in WebApp 3, but only 2 seconds in Web Application Server!

bullet

The Microsoft Web Stress tool running a simple application script shows WebApp 3 serving between 7-9 requests per second, but showed Web Application Server serving between 71-73 requests per second!

The Visual DataFlex Web Application Server shares a common technology foundation with the components used to build and deploy Windows applications. This enables the development and interchangeable use of application code, data dictionaries and components for both Windows and Web applications.

Additional enhancements to the Web Application Server include new features added to the Administrator that expand its functionality and enhancements to improve usability, easy transition from WebApp Server 3 to the Web Application Server (as the new server can run "side-by-side" with previous revisions), and improved error handling and error messages.

Web Application Server Licensing
Visual DataFlex Web Application Servers execute Web-based application software developed with Visual DataFlex Studio. Web Application Server's components include the application execution engine, a COM-based interface to Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS), database utilities, the embedded database and, optionally, database connectivity drivers. A Visual DataFlex Web Application Server license is required for each hardware server on which a Visual DataFlex web application is installed.

Web Application Server Licenses
bullet

Internet Edition - Supports unlimited number of concurrent sessions or browser connections subject to the limits of the Web Server's resources and Internet infrastructure. Supports process pooling. The Internet Edition license allows users to host commercial websites.

bullet

Enterprise Edition - Manages the combination of up to 255 Internet Edition servers in a cluster configuration to allow for highly scalable, load-balancing, fault tolerant web application servers. Each Web Application Enterprise Server "master" connects to n-Web Application Internet Server "slaves" to create a highly scalable application architecture.

bullet

Lite Edition - Supports up to 5 concurrent sessions and does not support process pooling. Electos can be deployed on a Lite Edition server, however, due to its session limits, the Lite Edition server is not recommended for production websites.

Note: A Lite Edition server comes with the Visual DataFlex Studio however it is licensed for development & testing only and cannot be used for application deployment.

Annual Subscriptions are available for Visual DataFlex Web Application Servers to provide application customers with all updates and enhancements delivered by Data Access during a one year period.

Evaluation Web Application Server
A ready-to-install, Visual DataFlex 12 Web Application Server intended to be used by web application developers as an embeddable platform upon which to distribute evaluation versions of their solutions to prospective customers. The Evaluation Web Application Server is limited to 5 concurrent sessions (just like the Lite Server) and will automatically expire and cease to operate 30 days following installation on a given computer system. Specific terms and conditions of use are defined in the License Agreement. An Evaluation Web Application Server can be “activated in place” to enable a customer to use the application without re-installation.
